Transition from IRC5 to OmniCore for the IRB6700 Series

Hello everyone,

I just noticed that the IRB6700 robots are no longer listed on ABB's website and have been replaced by the IRB6710–IRB6740 models with OmniCore controllers.

What does this change actually imply? Will RAPID programs developed for the IRC5 still work? As for the controller itself, are the Ethernet, I/O, and other communication ports the same ?

I assume that support will still be available for IRC5, right ?

    Hello Charles-David,

    The RAPID code that you've developed using the IRC5 is 100% compatible with OmniCore Controllers.  And you will find a considerable number of new instructions and functions available in RobotWare 7.  All major industrial protocols are (or soon will be) supported such as  ProfiNet/ProfiSafe, EtherNet/IP/CIP Safety, EtherCAT/EtherCAT FSoE, CC-Link/CC-Link IE Safety, DeviceNet, Serial, TCP/IP.  As ABB has for S4 and S4C controllers, which have been obsolete for 20 + years, we will continue to support IRC5 controllers for many years to come.

    Regarding this transition, we were using 600 VAC in our application. Is this option still available for the IRB 6710-40? The datasheet seems to indicate that it stops at 480 VAC.

    Hi Charles-David, ABB Canada will be able to supply a local transformer for 600V to 480V as an option for the controller.
